On Moving To Hartford

When you move in your twenties, people ask, "Did you meet a guy?"

When you move in your thirties, people ask, "Did you get a job?"

When you say you moved to New London, people look a little confused but slightly positive, as if they are thinking of vaguely nautical things they once encountered on a field trip.

When you say you moved to Putnam, people nod approvingly; they're thinking of Putnam County, New York.

When you say you moved to Hartford, people literally do a double take like a bad movie actor.

"No, it's nice!" you say, enumerating Hartford's charms as they look at you with concern.

But really, it is nice.
