Off Your Trolley

Like I did last summer, this year I've been writing about summer day trips in Connecticut for Patch.com. I took these pictures while working on one about unexpected places to visit in northern Hartford County. One stop I suggest in the article is the Connecticut Trolley Museum, in East Windsor. They have a bunch of old trolley cars, a few of which you can enter and pretend you're a vintage commuter. They have a Fire Museum, with all sorts of equipment and trucks and models. And they have disused buses scattered around the grounds, like old cars up on blocks in someone's yard. To quote myself:

Kids will love the unlimited trolley rides, but possibly the best part of the experience for adults is the museum’s  ramshackle character. Trolleys (and some retro buses) are crammed tightly together or parked around the grounds, creating an appealingly haphazard scene.

It really is the opposite of the slick, everything-in-its-place museum you'd expect from something of this size. You might want to borrow some kids if you don't have any, but if you can't do that, it's not a bad place to be that weird childless adult. Once you get over buying your tickets, it's not half as embarrassing as, say, being the only grown-up not escorting a class trip while watching the Lewis and Clark IMAX movie at the Gateway Arch. Not that I'd know about that...

  1. I've been wanting to bring Mike there because he loves anything automotive but I feel weird because we don't have kids to bring. Maybe I'll borrow some.

  2. Oh, I think it's fine to be sans kids if he's really into the mechanical or historical aspects of it. That's a legitimate reason to go!
